Wildlife in Mexico City
Wildlife Watching in Mexico City
Mexico City has an abundance of wildlife, especially for such a large city. Not only are there endemic and migratory birds, there are also squirrels, axolotls, snakes and amphibians.
The Bosque de Chapultepec park in the middle of the city is home to a large number of creatures. Two of the most common are the striking Great-tailed Grackle, an iridescent black bird, and the Mexican Gray Squirrel with it’s bushy tail chasing people attempting to steal their snacks.
The floating gardens of the Xochimilco canals (formerly a wetland lake system) is one of the last remaining locations for the wild axolotl. You will see artwork dedicated to these fascinating creatures, but it is unlikely that you will see any in the wild. The canals are also home to a number of snakes, which are easier to see.
I saw numerous Crevice Swift lizards basking in the sun at Teotihuacan.
